In 2018, Caterpillar made hydraulic mini excavator models in the 1 to 2-ton class called the Cat® Next Generation Mini Excavators.

• The 301.5, a 1.5-ton class standard tail canopy model.
• The 301.7, a 1.7-ton class compact radius with canopy model.

You can operate the machine as you have always done using the pedals and levers, or you can operate in stick-steer mode which allows you to travel using the joysticks. Compact Radius Excavators

Construction and demolition excavators like the Volvo ECR48C compact excavator or compact radius machine have a backend that does not extend beyond the footprint of the machine.  

When rotating in an area with limited digging space the compact radius of these excavators helps them avoid contact with walls, buildings, vegetation, and construction site personnel.  

While working in a highway construction situation where you have to keep part of the road open but you have to dig in part of the road then the excavator does not hang over into oncoming traffic.  

As your machine rotates it can be seen that the back of the excavator does not stick out any farther than the outside of the track, making it a very nice unit for very specialized highway construction or up-close excavator work.
